Jesus Ate My Homework

What if you were a teacher and you had a pupil who decided to answer quiz questions with "God did it" or "because God said so"?

What if you, as a teacher, decided that this student was merely expressing their right to religious freedom and to give them a failing grade, reprimand them or correct them publicly would be a violation of their rights?

What if other students caught on to this and began to express their own rights to their religious beliefs over what is taught?

Welcome to Oklahoma.

The Edmund Sun reports...
The Oklahoma House of Representatives Education Committee has just approved House Bill 2211. The bill is expected to pass the full House, and then to go to the Senate. Its authors describe it as promoting freedom of religion in the public schools.

The bill requires public schools to guarantee students the right to express their religious viewpoints in a public forum, in class, in homework and in other ways without being penalized. If a student’s religious beliefs were in conflict with scientific theory, and the student chose to express those beliefs rather than explain the theory in response to an exam question, the student’s incorrect response would be deemed satisfactory, according to this bill.
So your religion can now nullify your child's education? Maybe no one has ever accused you of being ignorant or maybe you've never considered the idea but using you personal beliefs as a shield, blocking your children from opposing ideas and turning their education into an extension of Bible school is the very definition of ignorant.

These are kids. How many kids love doing their homework? Honestly if I were in an Oklahoma high school right now I would be rushing to be reborn. Baptize me, bless me and I'd even be up for a little weekend crucifixion if it meant that I could ignore and contradict nearly every single thing taught in science class.

Fuck, I would go the distance.

I would go on to college and major in the sciences. I would use my religion to skate through without having to absorb one bit of knowledge. Contradiction would be my vehicle and I would be lead-footing it through the education system, exhaust smoking, wheels a' screeching and radio blaring "Welcome to the Jungle".

I would go on to change the face of biology, microbiology, physics, Earth sciences, geology, archeology and maybe even psychology or medicine.

...

I don't care what faith my doctor does or not belong to. All I care is that he uses the full extent of proven science to ensure my health. I would surely laugh at any doctor who prescribed prayer instead of medicine.

This bill applies to no particular religion and therefore would make it perfectly legal for a Scientologist to major in phsycholgy/psychiactry, contradicting every single lesson yet still being awarded a diploma.

Sure, I'm overreacting. This is just a bill in one state that only affects school children. But they are children who will grow up to guide their own kids, spread their own expectations and perhaps become Senators one day themselves.

Spread the word and stomp this fire out before it spreads.

Do not let religion win over science by making it legal to study science without any concern for actual fact.
Well played, religion. Well played.

Especially seeing as homeschooling is such a real possibility in the States (it's very hard to get permission in some countries). I respect people's right to teach their kids whatever rubbish they see fit I suppose, but they need to do it at home or in religious schools. Expecting public schools to pass kids for writing religious answers is way too much, and it's actually pretty ungrateful considering the massive educational freedoms already available in America. The FSM approved my answer, btw.

One of the clearest lessons of the last few decades is that capitalism is indestructible. Marx compared it to a vampire, and one of the salient points of ccvp comparison now appears to be that ccnt always rise up again after being stabbed to death. Even Mao’s attempt, in the Cultural Revolution, to wipe out the traces of capitalism, ended up in its triumphant return ccna exam. Today’s Left reacts in a wide variety of ways to the hegemony of global capitalism and its political supplement, liberal democracy. It might, for example, accept the hegemony 70-536 braindump, but continue to fight for reform within its rules (this is Third Way social democracy).

But what if it is NOT science. Lets say that it is a class on ethics where some elements of morality come into question. Who's to say what is moral and what is not? Where do most people get their sense of morality from? I would have to say that it is from religion. Does religion play a part in our education? You bet it does. Where do our fundamental values of right and wrong come from? The law? Nope, further back than that. Before a state had its laws, before our country was founded, before....there was religion. The foundation of this country was based on religion. Just my 2 cents worth. :)
Terence's picture
I don't think it matters whether it's science, morals, ethics, philosophy, or badminton... religion involved in schools is a bad thing. I don't want my kids brainwashed by crackpot creationist ideas, nor do I think it is fair to subject young impressionable minds to these cults before they are able to make decisions for themselves. The "foundation of this country" was NOT based on religion... it was based on freedom. The Constitution does not mention god at all (only the Declaration of Independence does, and even then, only once). If you really want to know what our founding fathers thought of religion read the text of the Treaty of Tripoli. The question isn't "does religion play a part in our education?", it is "SHOULD religion play a part in our education?". And that answer is NO. Our children should be exposed to science, to process the facts, before being submitted to the religious brainwashing of their parents. At least then they'd be capable of making decisions for themselves instead of regurgitating their parents insecurities.

The biggest reason that studios and other people aren't going to make their own formats is simple. Money. These companies have spent millions on developing these technologies. They are going to start years behind these other people, and who else is going to support them? Promotional Chocolates Are they going to just make their own hardware? This guy claims that movie studios are just going to spend all this money on R&D to not only catch up to established hardware manufacturers, but offer something that competes with their latest technologies.

Great people in our society and around the world don't get to the top of their respective fields, because they're lazy or have no ambition!  They get to the top of their fields, because of hard work, and because of the following words, which I think are some of the most important words in the world...discipline; dedication; sacrifice; commitment; determination; honesty, etc.  Correct me if I'm wrong...but none of these words are available over-the-counter.  Your doctor cannot prescribe any of them.  Everyone has these qualities in their souls...but they have to dig down deep...find them and use them, etc. Excuse-makers are negative people, in my view.  They always talk about what they can't do...instead of what they CAN do.  If it isn't one excuse...it's another!  What they do best, is to get jealous and resentful of other people's accomplishments, etc.  They usually can't accomplish much of anything with their own lives. discipline: (definition); to bring to a state of order and obedience by training SEO Company and control;"Without discipline, there is no life at all."  Katherine Hepburn Smoking:  I quit smoking in 1970, and in the year 2008, I have not touched a cigarette since that time.  It takes discipline to quit smoking!  I've heard my share of excuse-making in this area of quitting smoking, etc.   There was a knock on the door one day, and it was a neighbor down the hall where I live.  He was desperate, and the tone of his voice and appearance showed it!  "Jerry, you quit smoking, right?"  I told him yes, and he wanted me to help him quit smoking, and if he didn't quit, he was going to lose a leg!

This is absolutely ridiculous. Jesus Christ (no pun intended)...what's next? What happened to seperation of church and state? As far as I know, public schools are government funded institutions and thereby should have nothing whatsoever to do with religion! If religious citizens don't like what's being taught in the public school system then they should send their kids to church sanctioned schools or homeschool them. And it figures that this is happening in OK...I lived there for several years...during a time when we had to go down to Texas to get tattoos...it was illegal for shops to setup in OK! So, any state that would try and tell you what to do with your own body, wouldn't have any problems making laws like this when it comes to your mind. IMHO

If someone put me in an ethics class based on religion I would seriously question their ability to teach anyone squat about squat. Aren't the days when morality equaled religious belief over for most thinking people? Or do I just come from the Antipodes?

If morality is not based on religion of some kind, what determines right and wrong? Or am I to understand that every person individually determines what is right or wrong as they see it.
Diamond Digger's picture
Andy, I got my sense of morality from my family and just life in general...it had nothing to do with religion. You don't need religion to know the difference between right and wrong! I think that a few priests, fundamentalist preachers, and a few (or more than a few) staunch Republicans have proven that religion is not always synonymous with morality!!! Just my 2 cents :o)

Knowing how "Tolerant" this region of the country is when it comes to race and religion, I'm sure the politicians and conservative constituents will eat their words when a Muslim student chooses to apply their religion to their studies.

"If morality is not based on religion of some kind, what determines right and wrong?" Why would we consider religion as 'moral' or ethical to begin with? The most heinous acts on earth are committed in the name of religion. Religion is synonymous with ignorance and cruelty throughout much of the Middle East and Africa and increasingly Asia, thanks to extremist forms of Islam. Christianity is not so horrific in the present day, but it has a shocking and shameful history and many highly questionable modern day teachings. The short answer to your rather amazing question is - psychobiology, the survival instinct (remembering that our survival generally depends on the wellbeing of our group/kind, not just ourselves), culture, emotion, reciprocity (also a survival strategy), intelligence, evolution.

This is one of the tousand issues giving me a headeck everytime I hear about it, even in the bible God said, Give Cesar what is from the Cesar and Give God what belongs to God, we cannot separate in our spirit from God, but we have to give things a place and a time, going to extrems is what it makes the worst part, commun sense can give you the answer any time a situation like that comes along, but if we decide to go radical, extremist and fight to death for our belives in every single thing during the day, then becames CAOS, AND that is what is happening in this Country, while the goverment and army fights war against extreme radicals, we are cooking them in the oven at home, PEOPLE PLEASE, PICK YOUR FIGHTS, WHAT IS RELEVANT?, AM I GOING TO AFFECT NEGATIVELY TO OTHERS IF I INSIST IN A STUPID ISSUE? AM I GOING TO GET SMARTER, OR GO TO HEAVEN FASTER? IS THIS REALLY IMPORTANT? ANSWER IS NO THEN I STOP, GOOOOSH, I THINK WE NEED A CLASS ON COMMUN SENSE!!! starting in kinderGarden.

The reality of the situation: the bill will get passed, the reality will set in, there will be lawsuits, it will go to the supreme court, it will be ruled unconstitutional and Oklahoma will end up looking like a bunch of backwoods inbreds (except those Okeys that read GorillaSushi - you guys are geniuses).

@Andy
I respect you and your right to an opinion - I would not try and sway your convictions and I don't think you would assume that you could sway mine but I do have some counter-points...
  • Ethics classes teach about morality and ethics but do not teach morals to our kids. Would you hold a public school responsible for teaching morals? Who's morals would they teach?
  • Since I've never been to church or participated in any form of religion does that make me immoral? (just a thought)
  • I believe that morality (like law) is a multi-layered thing. There is morality for the home, the community, the state, the country and the world. We all agree that murder is bad but the morality of the punishment for murder is varied from state to state.
  • My values of right and wrong come from my parents, my friends, my family, TV, books, blogs and experiences (to name a few). Any given person's morality is going to change throughout their life and may shift due to their surroundings and situation. Think about what you would do to survive in prison...
  • I respect people's religions but it does not belong in public schools paid for by tax payers.
  • What if a Muslim, a Jew, a Christian and an atheist all answer a test question differently and all get it right even though their answers may contradict each other? Doesn't that mock our education system?
Just some thoughts...

@Diamond Digger

Is very easy to know what ethics is in your life, that should be teached by the parents, but in a society sometimes so rotten, where do the kids are going to learn Nothing but negative things,,,, We can figure out what is wrong or right very easy If it feels wrong..........is wrong If it feels right..........is right We have a spirit, counscience, soul however you want to call it, and that one purpuse is to help you figure out what is the decisions you should take every time, I don't think school should teach ethics to kindergarden I was beeing sarcastic, we should better let kindergarden kids teach us about moral and ethics that is a good idea (I am beeing sarcastic again:)

Ya know, I'm not surprised. I just listened to the Sally Kern thing last night. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFxk7glmMbo) With people like her in office in OK, it's no wonder they are turning out bills like this. It's depressing to think that there are so many people like this in our country and in the world. Even more depressing to realize how many of them are running our government at every level. We vote them into office and all the bad shit comes out afterward. Clinton and Lewinski was funny. Kern and that bill are not.
Shine's picture
Isn't scary, I really don's see hope anywere I =look now with this candidates, it doesn't matter who wins or who loses, we all are going to loose there is so much desestability, the people and goverment divided in a way that there is not sign of wanted to start working towards ONE PURPOSE, the benefit of the Country, everybody is worried more about their own thing and bussines, and others to worried about other countries business and others don't give a damn... so... The One thing I have is faith, and come up with some ideas to start changing the peoples counscience by sending good messages just as people as you and others in this blog contribute to change the world, little by little a grain of sand and then other and then other build great shores so there is hope in the horizont, lets keep our counscience clean and with eyes wide open,,, and rise your child teaching them how the world really is, not as the school want to let them belive or church, we have to guide them that is why we are parents, to be guide of them, :)

Thanks so much for bringing more information to the table! That Sally Kern video is sickening and it's no surprise that she (a pastor's wife) authored the bill. I haven't heard anything about that video or about this bill on the news - why? I've heard constant coverage about the NY mayor paying for sex. We as bloggers have a voice here. We can spread the important news and shine light on the darker corners of the world - places where hate and bigotry fester unchecked.

Yes, change starts at home. Your own conduct, the way you raise your child and not being willing to overlook those things you see as wrong - these are the ways in which we change our world. You might want to check out the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster if you've never heard of it!

Hey guys, before you get your panties in a knot how about you try READING THE BILL. You might be surprised. Or not. Believe whatever gives you the most outrage points. You can redeem them for fabulous prizes, I hear, like a Members Only jacket emblazoned with the words "I AM AN INSUFFERABLE CUNT."
lusciousnis's picture
Hmm.. outrage points? Nah, I think we have too many reasons to be outraged, we really don't get anything out of venting. I don't think anyone on here has a problem with a different viewpoint, this is a very open/non-judgemental site. If you have valid information that I don't have, please do share. Posting anonymous insults, however, is such a pussy move. Or maybe you had to post anonymously so your mommy wouldn't catch you using the word 'cunt'. At any rate, don't play with a word you have absolutely no knowledge of.
Jason's picture
Oh! How did I ever overlook this comment??

A closer look shows how I not only read the bill but linked to it, douche-nozzle.

You fundies are the most propagandist cowardly shits in the world - thanks for being American's Taliban!
Anonymous's picture
Oh you read it, did you? Then surely you are familiar with this part: "Homework and classroom assignments shall be judged by ordinary academic standards of substance and relevance and against other legitimate pedagogical concerns identified by the school district. Students shall not be penalized or rewarded on account of the religious content of their work." SHALL NOT BE PENALIZED OR REWARDED. It's a stupid bill meant to mollify Christian retards who think that their religion is being oppressed in godless public schools. But it absolutely does not allow for students to opt out of assignments by saying "God did it." You would know this if you read the bill. I'm assuming you didn't read it, because the alternative is that you utterly failed to comprehend what you read, which I would consider much more insulting. But just keep on believing whatever you find most ideologically pleasing. That's what the fundies do, after all, and it has worked pretty well for them.
Jason's picture
So if my science paper is 100% religious content then I shall not be "penalized or rewarded"? You claim to know so much about this bill then what the fuck happens then? Teacher's discretion?
patricia's picture

The first problem with homework is that it takes away a child's leisure time. Other
than studies a child does a lot of things like singing, dancing, playing etc. but due to
homework he cannot do so. Half the day is gone at school. Later when children come
back home they again have sit down with studies. Some children have hidden talents.
If a boy is determined to pursue his talent, he cannot do so. Nowadays in colleges,
universities, schools talent is given special importance but just because of homework a
child does not get an opportunity to pursue his/her talent. We should abolish
homework before it drives a child insane.
