The Abortion Fight In My Back Yard

Hey, there I am!
Where have I been? Well, I could come up with quite a few excuses for my absence over the last few days (including one awkward funeral) but the biggest reason is my focus on fighting some religious extremists who've descended upon my neighborhood.

Less than 2 miles from my front door is one of the most controversial buildings in the Midwest right now. It's the newest and largest Planned Parenthood facility in the country. The facility was supposed to open this last Tuesday but has been blocked by some legal trip-wires laid by the religious crazies who've been holding vigils outside for the last 40 or so days. The facility's permits were in the name of it's subsidiary, Gemini Corp., which is neither unusual nor illegal.

Here's what Planned Parenthood will offer my community...
  • Complete gynecological services, including breast exams and pap tests
  • A range of contraceptive options
  • Pregnancy testing
  • Screening and treatment for sexually transmitted infections
  • Rapid HIV testing
  • Emergency contraception
  • Abortion services
  • Options counseling, including adoption referrals
  • Educational programs
  • English and Spanish speaking medical professionals
And here's a short news piece on the ordeal.
My frame of mind is a pro-choice one (as opinionated as I can be, being a male) but I am anti-abortion. Abortion is a dreadful procedure but in some cases a neccessary one. More importantly abortion is not in itself the problem - unwanted pregnancies are the problem. Address the growing numbers of unwanted pregnancies and the numbers of abortions preformed will dwindle.

Here's some startling yet important numbers.
  1. Number of abortions per year: Approximately 46 Million
  2. Legality of abortion: About 26 million women obtain legal abortions each year, while an additional 20 million abortions are obtained in countries where it is restricted or prohibited by law. [Source]
Those numbers speak volumes. It's obviously way too many abortions but it clearly demonstrates that abortions will be performed irregardless of the legality. It should also be fairly obvious that legal, licensed and clean abortions are much safer than the illegal type.

The practice of willfully terminating a pregnancy has been around since before the advent of written history. It predates the Bible. Closing abortion clinics and trying to make the practice unlawful will not make abortions go away. The most direct approach (whether you're pro-this or pro-that) is to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies by offering a wide range of contraceptive services and counseling to people of all incomes - which is exactly what Planned Parenthood does.

I've been standing up on all fronts and invite you (even if you don't live in the area) to speak up also. You can...

To Quote Christopher Hitchens Religion Poisons Everything. If you want to see the innards of the Pro-Life movement I strongly suggest you view Army of God. Keep a bucket nearby at all time.

I am PRO CHOICE 100%. Those people are seriously scary.

It's funny. I've seen some so-called pro-lifers spew stuff about being pro-death-penalty too. Go figure. Also, I agree with you 200%.

Religious crazies make me laugh and cry in equal measure. They're so one-eyed and indoctrinated that they won't even pause to consider another point of view. I loved reading your posts and the subsequent responses on the Families Against Planned Parenthood site - until now I had no idea that I was living in a time period known globally as the 'Culture of Death'!?! Sounds like a dodgy rock band to me. And what's with all this "let's spray them with Holy water, yeah, that'll sort them out, hee hee" crap all about?? These guys sound like pre-pubescent nerds hatching a juvenile plan. And let's face it, if Jesus was big on people who built home made placards and paraded them out the front of buildings he would have grabbed his sandals, combed his beard, and come riding in on his donkey to "save the planet" a long time ago. These people get my goat.

Thanks, everyone! As of now, a federal court has ruled that the documents involved in the construction must be reviewed (my city had previously dismissed these so it went to a federal level). Until there is an outcome, Planned Parenthood remains closed.

@Paula
Thanks, I try (sometimes).

@Dave
I'll definitely check that one out. Seen Jesus Camp or Deliver Us From Evil?

@Meleah
Just imagine how scary they are when you go out for drunken ice cream at 1am and find them hovering about like zombies.

@Lis
Pro-war too. They argue that abortion is the largest killer thus it's their only focus. I say ignorance is a bigger killer.

@Geedos
Thanks so much for taking the time to read through their gibberish. It means a lot to me to know that someone with some common sense has heard me. This type of religion is essentially a group delusion. They feed on each other see only what they want to see.

Yeah I saw Jesus Camp... the girl with the tears rolling down her eyes scared me. I haven't seen Deliver us from Evil though I'll take a look ASAP.

Jason, I think it would be weird if someone was pro abortion. Nobody is for abortion. Nobody wants to get an abortion. But you're right, they happen, despite legality or not. I'm glad you have your head on straight and know that the solution isn't taking away a womans right to choose but to offer easier ways of obtaining contraceptives.

i've been without health insurance for over 10 years now, and i have to thank pp for at least giving me my yearly girly exams, and providing me with pills, tests and such for no charge over the years. i've got my issues with abortion, but the other services they provide strongly out weigh any of that. they save more lives than they take.

This is one of those times when I don't envy Americans. No health care? Holy Shit. Without Universal Health Care, I'd be more than bankrupted with all the surgeries I've had and the times I've been to the emergency room. But it looks like we are moving towards privatized health care. Just the idea makes me puke, so having to live with will make me ill.

conservative politicians know they will never reverse roe vs wade, it gives them a great un-issue to rally their base around- like gay marriage- and give them the votes they need to give the lobbyists what they want, like war- obviously same sex couples loving each other is much more heinous to them than thousands of young Americans being killed in an unpopular war.  when the country goes to war people get rich- that is what is important to politicians. pro-lifers mean well but they are tools. they don't want sex education in schools, they don't want poor disadvantaged women to have abortions, and they don't want to pay for social services that the poor working class needs to care for their children. if they really cared about human life we wouldn't be at war right now. religion is a veil. not that all christians are disillusioned and uneducated, but there's enough to make a difference.

I don't believe it should be used as a form of birth control.
