This Is a Tragedy

This morning I came upon the idea of writing a post about gun control, the NRA and ultimately questioning our right to bear arms. Before I put fingers to keyboard, I was struck by a deeper morality. Instead, I give you this...

This is not an epidemic.
This is not an isolated incident.
This is not a rallying cry.
This is not your political platform.

This is not your shot at a Pulitzer.
This is not a time to say "I told you so".
This is not a call to action.
This is not your shot at prime time.
This is not about religion.
This is not a way to support your cause.
This is not about immigration.
This is not a conspiracy.
This is not link bait.
This is not funny.
This is not a wake up call.
This is not yours to use.
This is not something you should forget.
This is not an excuse to use the phrase "a post-Virginia Tech world".
This is not ratings gold.
This is not an outcry for legislation.
This is not grounds for a lawsuit.
This is not your fault.

This is a tragedy.

I hear you, Jason. It's a terrible, terrible event. Made worse, I believe, by self-interested media vultures who mine such tragedy for their own gain, which just make the next event more likely. Where is decency?

it’s annoying the shit outta me. feels kinda like a chain-letter to me. like ‘how many ppl can i get to join the bandwagon?’ anyway, the poem is beautiful and very poignant. good job. vrtualme.com

Yeah, sounds lame. As if the families of the victims would see that and say "whew, that fixes everything".

I wouldn't be able to question if we should have a bunch of people running around with guns either after reading that. This poem is very well put. It is a tragedy. Period. And it shouldn't be called anything else.
