1408 Trailer

Saw this trailer yesterday while waiting for Grindhouse to start.
Based on the short Stephen King horror story of the same name, 1408 surrounds supernatural writer Mike Enslin, an author of two hit books focusing on supernatural phenomena. As research for his latest book, Enslin is determined to check out the notorious room 1408 in a New York City hotel by personally staying as a guest in the fabled room. With the intention that 1408 is just a myth perpetuated by stories and rumor that Enslin has collected for his past works. However, hotel manager Mr. Olin has strong objections to Enslin's stay and only warns him of possible danger to come. But Enslin is determined to go through and convinced that the horrific past of 1408 is just mere coincidence and a myth. But what Mike Enslin is about to experience is no myth, as 1408 truly is a room where the guests don't check out by noon.

p.s. The first half of Grindhouse (Planet Terror) was awesome! The second flick, Death Proof, was mostly tedious and boring. Both movies featured a "missing reel" warning that's rumored to be the NC17 content (possible), to cut down on time or just a stylistic homage/joke (it was only funny the first time).

I recommend waiting for the DVD - it's probably going to be worth the $$ just for the special features.

I only wish that the fake trailer at the beginning of the movie could be true. A story of a Mexican low-life who gets double crossed and left for dead before he returns to seek revenge with his signature weapon...

Yeah, that's Danny Trejo. You better hope he didn't see you lookin' at him. Gringo.

I mentioned 1408 to Wonton when we took her to see 300; I'm surprised you hadn't seen it sooner. I'm about as big a cynic when it comes to King on the Big Screen as they come, but this does look really, really original.

As for Grindhouse, I agree that the first movie was much more enjoyable than the second, but find it odd that just about every critic I've heard from rates it the other way around. I think it's because, in retrospect, the second movie WAS pretty good, it just...you know...wasn't a Grindhouse movie. He even forgot to put in the film grain/sound errors after the first half, which is just sloppy IMHO.

About the 'missing reel's, while I seriously doubt there's anything behind Rodreguez's (it seems far too calculated for humor value), I'm willing to put money that there's a complete scene behind Tarantino's. Go rewatch the trailer; you'll see just a hint of a lapdance. From what I understand, for the most part, the R rating didn't come from large, sweeping cuts; rather, it was a nickel and dime job (like the scratched film over the cheerleader on the trampoline, which apparently wasn't there on the screener copy).

And screw Machete; give me Thanksgiving!

I'm beyond cynical when it come to Steven King both on the big and small screens. Yet, I'm a sucker for horror movie trailers. No matter how much I know a horror flick will possibly suck, I still fall for the trailer.

Yeah, it's weird about critics panning Planet Terror. I think I may be nearing the end of my unconditional respect for new Tarantino films. 75% of that movie was girls gabbing exhaustively. Sure, there's some of the longest shots of ever that are either a demo of flawless acting or must have been shot 100 times to get it but it just deflated the tension to the point of boredom. Why would you bother to develop characters in that genre? I think he's coasting on his formula of cool music and hip dialogue plus his own reputation, both of which can only go so far.

I'm betting that the missing reel thing is their ploy at increasing DVD sales - and I bet it works. It's a shame that Grindhouse did so poorly on it's opening (holiday) weekend so they will be NEEDING the DVD sales.

For fans of ridiculous censorship, I recommend the R rated version of Spun. Halfway through they start blurring nudity and bleeping swears. It seems like a comedic device at first but then you realize that they just blew out the whole back end of the movie to please censors. The unrated version is much more enjoyable.

p.s. Tarantino shouldn't try to act. Keep it to cameos like Hitchcock, Stan Lee and even Steven King...

Nope, I didn't know about 28 Weeks Later. Hopefully it'll be as cool as the first one...

Wow, I could have written this entire review myself since it is spot on to my observations of both Grindhouse and the 1408 trailer. Planet Terror was much better than Tarantino's "effort" and much more funny in a grindhouse sort of way. Death Proof dragged on for about 30 minutes longer than necessary and was too much talking heads and character development in the first half of it.

I listened to this audio book and it was great. Stepehn King read it himself and it was somehwat creepy in his own voice. It's one of those short stories that gets extended to an hour and a half so it should be interesting.

Take a closer look at Danny Trejo's IMDB page. You may be pleasantly surprised...

Holy crap! I'm all like "I've seen Danny Trejo's (impressive) IMDB page before". But then I thought for a moment. "Could it be?"

YES! Machete is in pre-production!?!! With Rodriguez directing!
OMG PONIES!!!!

I noticed that the plot outline on IMDB describes Cheech Marin as "his old friend Benicio Del Toro, who has become a priest". Oops.

p.s. For anyone who still doesn't know Danny Trejo, you should. He's in 16 movies set to be released this year alone. And he could eat Tom Cruise.

He wouldn't even have to chew. It'd be like a python swallowing a deer.

I've got some Photoshopping to do...
