The Alcoholics' Guide to Mold Farming

The wife and I take pride in the idea of considering ourselves half-assed wine snobs.

That means we have all sorts of fancy (yet cheap) wines, fancy corkscrews, foil cutters and our little wine fridge. I say "half-assed" because if you look carefully you'll see that the wine fridge is hall wine and half hard-liquor. Gotta put it somewhere right?

So here's today's lesson. If you go away for a week in Mexico and want to save electricity and money by turning off everything in the house before you go, don't unplug the wine fridge. Unplugging the wine fridge seems like a harmless act, right? What could go wrong?

Well, it seems that when your wine loses its cool, it becomes the perfect home for mold. Not long after we arrived home we discovered a thin, sporadic coat of mold throughout the fridge. The bottles that had been opened and recorked were hit the worst.

The bad part was the fact that we had to part with a few bottles. The good part was the really cool pictures I got of the mold.

Whoa, when did my camera decide to take such nice pictures??

...that was YOUR idea. (rolling eyes) I take if you have a fridge you are drinking mostly whites (reds at all?). There is this incredible Chardonnay from Australia that has a hint of grapefruit... yummy. I will retrieve the name. I am not a wine snob. I feel so left out. Nice mold photo.

Actually we're fans or merlot and cabernet but we'll try anything! I do know that NO wines should be stored at room temp. but that's just about where my concern stops.

It's not the fridge. You're just dirty in general.

Anyway, been awhile since I been back here but i got my first bloggy e-mail thingamajiggity today and what a wonderful blog to come back to. And "wow" @ a whole fridge for your wine. :O But I must say...Why throw the wine away? That's wasting! Eat the mold. Then, drink the wine. Mmkay. Yeah, that was just...Ew. But seriously, the mold could be like a cheese substitute or something. If you do decide to eat it, youtube that sucker and post it in your next blog. Hehe. Just a suggestion... :)And why the hell do we have to have a math quiz before posting a comment??? I'm not good at math. At all. I don't have enough fingers to add up 7 + 4. :'( I admit. I cheated. I used my pinky toe. :D Tee hee. Have a good one. ;)

Nice to get a peek into your kitchen GS. Can we have a look inside your fridge? Btw, these pics are good visuals for the lessons we learn about wine storage. Rule of them: when you open a bottle, drink the bottle :))

Ewww. That's why I'll stick to the wine in a box.
