Roger Moore killed hat fashion

I miss hats.

I've been a milliphile all my life. While I wasn't so desperate that I wore a fedora to school like a friend of mine (to constant ridicule), but I've always missed that mode of personal expression. One of the best things about being in the military was having a hat all the time.

Now, I had always blamed the fading of hat fashion on the free and easy 70's - those folks didn't wear clothes, for the most part, and figure hats were the first to go.

However, I've been watching the 007 marathon they had on Starz ("007 in '07"), and the thing that strikes me most from the earlier episodes (most notably the opening gunshot scene), and I realized that the hat in the opening gunshot barrel vanished when Roger Moore took over as Bond.

So I'm blaming Roger Moore's term as James Bond, and his dislike for hats (he never wore a hat as The Saint, either) for killing the entire hat industry.

Yes, Roger Moore didn't wear a hat, but the haberdashers of the world have not suffered entirely from Sir Roger's brimless silhouette. Hats retained their popularity amongst Black Americans, Orthodox Jews, and kids who couldn't figure out which direction the bill faces on a baseball cap. Had George Sanders played James Bond, the hat would have remained. I just got a great new hat for Valentines Day. I look very Saintly. in Goldfinger, he killed Oddjob.... who we all know is 'The Hat Man'.  Incidentely, the original use of the hat in the opening gun sequence was to hide the face of the stunt double (Bob Simpson) of Sir Connery.

Some might argue that Roger Moore is a real life hero, then.
